Do you want to make your DRZ400 more powerful? Of course you do. In this article you’ll learn about if your chain is holding you back and what you can do to fix that. Traditionally, chains were made in a configuration that is now known as the Non-O Ring Chain or just regular chains. These are cheap to manufacture and don’t weigh very much, but they will stretch over time. When a chain stretches, it puts more strain on the sprockets until you tighten your chains. As engines have become more powerful, simple Non-O ring chains would wear out very quickly. The solution to this problem was O-ring chains, which use a rubber O-Ring to seal lubricants in and keep dirt out. O-Ring chains are also significantly stronger than their elastic counterparts, which translates into less wear on your sprockets.

One of the downsides of using an O-Ring chain is the increased friction, which means less response from your bike. The effect will become less pronounced once the engine has been heated. A further advancement in the chain industry is the X-Ring chain. X-ring Chain’s use rubber O rings with an “X” shaped cross sectional area, as opposed to the traditional cylindrical shape. The result is reduced friction on your chain while still enjoying the benefits of an O-Ring chain.

Now I’m going to talk about one of my favorite chains, the DID 520VX2 X-Ring Chain. I’ve had this chain for nearly five years and during that time I’ve put 3000 miles on my bike, replaced one of my sprockets, and installed a new plastic kit. I’ve had to tighten the chains twice, but never replace them, it runs perfectly fine. I will say that installation required a lot of force, the master link is intentionally made slightly too small. This ensures that once the masterlink on both sides is connected, it won’t go anywhere.
